Australia's Barz Optics' Cabo Floating sunglass have been nominated for the prestigious Dame Awards. The Overall Winner and Category Winners will be announced at the ICOMIA-METS Breakfast Briefing held in the Forum of Amsterdam RAI before the official opening of METS on Tuesday 18 November at 8:00 a.m.

The DAME 2014 received 116 entries from 23 nations all around the World. The 45 nominations represent companies from 16 different countries. The DAME Jury carefully assess entries for overall design, build quality, functionality, and use of materials.

Barz Optics CABO Floating sunglass details

1) The Cabo Sunglass has a buoyancy of 0.8244 gm/ml (fresh water has a buoyancy of 1.00 gm/ml and salt water varies between 1.02 and 1.02 gm/ml) hence the glasses float well in both fresh and salt water.

The buoyancy is created with enclosed air cells. The temples are moulded in three parts the outer full length section, a second section that is box shaped. These two components are then sonic welded together to create a sealed air chamber. Sonic welding is best explained by the taillights of a car - red, yellow and clear components are moulded separately then with the use of high frequency sound waves the components weld together.

After they are welded the temple is then placed into another moulding machine, which then moulds the non-slip rubberized temple grips.

Added buoyancy is also achieved with built in air cells in the nosepiece.

2) The Cabo features polycarbonate (high impact rated) sandwich constructed three-piece lenses. Made up of polycarbonate lens / polarising filter / pc lens. The rear lens has a pre-moulded magnification into the bottom centimeter and the three components are moulded into one.

The lens is then treated with a photochromic chemical that allows it to react to UV - in low light the lens lightens to Category 2 then in full sun it darkens to Category 3.

3) The magnification in the lens is available in +1.50, +2.00 and +2.50 magnification powers. Making them ideal for those who wear glasses to read charts or mobile phones, view their digital screens or tie fishing tackle without having to change from sunglasses to reading glasses.

To view the photochromic ability of the lenses hold the glasses in one hand with the lens facing the sun and your hand covering half the lens. After 30 - 40 seconds remove you hand and you will see that the part of the lens that had sun exposure is much darker (Cat3) and the area covered from the sun is still lighter (Cat2). If you do not have access to outside and the sun please use the UV400 torch - turn it on - place it very close to the outside of the lens and after 30 seconds you can see where the lens has reacted and gone darker.
