A disputa da primeira etapa da Volvo Ocean Race no Oceano Atlântico continua bastante acirrada. Depois de passar pela zona de calmaria dos Doldruns, os barcos têm como meta cruzar a Linha do Equador e chegar o mais rápido possível por Fernando de Noronha, passagem obrigatória antes da chegada na Cidade do Cabo, na África do Sul. Depois de 11 dias de regata, a liderança provisória é do Abu Dhabi, seguido bem de perto pelo Team Brunel. Árabes e holandeses conseguiram negociar bem a passagem pela calmaria entre os trópicos, local considerado um dos mais indecifráveis do oceano. O último levantamento foi feito às 15h40 UTC.

Com sete Volvo Ocean Race no currículo, o holandês Bouwe Bekking, comandante do Team Brunel, sabe de cor e salteado das dificuldades e das frustrações por falta de vento dos Doldruns. 'O único segredo é manter a calma e confiar na sua estratégia. Acreditar no seu jogo é fundamental nesta regata. É um jogo de dados, muitas vezes a sorte não vem'.

Atrás dos líderes e ainda cruzando os Doldruns aparecem Team Vestas Wind, Dongfeng, Team Alvimedica, Mapfre e Team SCA. Os cinco que perderam contato dos líderes devem, por sorte, pegar ventos mais favoráveis de 13 e 15 nós de vento, um pouco a mais do que os primeiros no fim desta quarta-feira (22). No entanto, de acordo com Gonzalo Infante - diretor de meteorologia da Volvo Ocean Race, a situação não vai mudar muito as coisas, apenas diminuir o estresse de quem está sem vento e com calor a bordo. 'Foi um calvário. A temperatura chegou a bater 31 graus à noite', disse Francisco Vignale, repórter a bordo do Mapfre, barco espanhol na Volta ao Mundo. 'Não deu para dormir'.

Pelo menos, como manda o ritual, os velejadores vão fazer festa ao cruzar a Linha do Equador. A maioria cria uma fantasia e registra esse momento simbólico. A tendência é que os primeiros passem pela linha nesta quinta-feira (23) no período da Volvo Ocean Race
