Volvo Leg 1 decided? Buy into Sailing Paradise...Optimists from Worlds

Classic lines, but a contemporary design and build, this waterfront property in the Bay of Islands offers the best of all a sailor’s worlds. Paul France http://paihia.ljhooker.co.nz/SSHE8
Welcome to Sail-World.com’s New Zealand e-magazine for October 22, 2014

Looks idyllic doesn't it?

Former America's Cup TV producer, Paul France, has decided to put this water's edge property in the Bay of Islands on the market. It will go to auction on November 22.

Despite its outward appearance this property is relatively new - being just 14 years old - but designed along the lines of a traditional villa making it look like it has been there forever.

Being sold with the property is a deep water mooring - making the ultimate buy for a sailor looking to buy a second home, buy in a partnership with friends, or looking for the Quiet Life.

In England when sailors retired from the sea, the saying was they would start walking inland carrying a pair of oars over their shoulder. When they go so far into the country that people asked what he was carrying, then the sailor knew he had reached the place to retire from the sea. But you don't have to go to this extreme - with property, you get the best of all worlds.

The Bay of Islands property is available for inspection this weekend - so keep and eye out for it on the way in, and have a look after the Coastal Classic. Details in this edition - and links to the agent.

The Volvo Ocean Race has enjoyed a fascinating nine days on the first leg.

Never before have we seen such close racing in a trans-oceanic event, and the call of Volvo Ocean Race organisers to opt for a one design fleet appears to have paid a big dividend.

No more of the creeping lead gains, as one boat finds its design groove in a particular set of conditions. Instead, the race has become one of navigational strategy.

The other great aspect of the ace so far is that the fleet have stayed intact without any of the breakdowns that have dogged the last three races, with boats being shipped to the finish of legs, or stopping for repairs. So far, the weather has been kind to the fleet - and maybe their test is yet to come in the next few days in the last half of Leg 1 to Cape Town.

Auckland will be experiencing it's own special offshore race with the PIC Coastal Classic getting underway on Friday morning.

To date there has been a big entry, and according to Predictwind there will be a fast ride up the coast. Whether it is sufficient to break records, remains to be seen. We will run an updated weather prognosis tomorrow.

In Argentina, the NZL Yachting Trust Optimist team is working up to the World Championships.

As is normal for this regatta, there are always unexpected issues - and this build-up period has been no different. Catch John Jennings' reports from the battle front in this edition.

We have been using Predictwind extensively for our reporting of the Volvo Ocean Race, and have done so for the last three editions of the round the world race, as well as many other trans-oceanic and local events.

A new Predictwind feature has been announced - swell prediction, which is now based on the prevailing winds and taking account of land mass - where previously open water swell projections were displayed.

This feature will be particularly useful to those who use Predictwind for cruising, and course routing. While the racers use course routing for the fastest route, Predictwind can also be used to pick the most comfortable route for cruising - set your own parameters such as your boat polar (or one close to it and make an adjustment) wind strength and now swell height.

Of course, you can run all this off a mobile phone if you are sailing in local waters or using the new Iridium feature if sailing offshore.

While all is quiet on the America's Cup front, there is some crucial news, dates and appointments coming up.

The Regatta Director needs to be appointed. The Match Venue is still a work in progress. We're expecting a significant sponsorship announcement for Oracle Team USA. There will be changes in the Challenger of Record situation that have already been signalled.

Plus there is the issue of where America's Cup World Series events will be held which need to be announced by November 1. Of course, that is hard when the Match Venue itself is not really known - and teams make a decision as to whether they are in or out of the 35th America's Cup game on the basis of that decision. The Racing Rules for the America's Cup are also supposed to be announced by November 1.

More later this week on www.sail-world.com along with all the latest sailing and racing news.

Good sailing!

Double Double
And the rest of the line is not toil and trouble, but quadruple, then another double… On the eve of the 100th Fastnet that has attracted some 464 entries, I heard of one entry in this record fleet that seemed so very apt. Not only because it includes the Commodore of the RORC, but because it combines two Brits and two Aussies.
