2014 Off Valparaíso Race - Day 2

by Soto 40 on 19 Oct 2014
2014 Soto 40 South American Tour Catalina Pérez
The Soto 40 fleet that competes in the Off Valparaíso Race was able to complete only one race in a day characterized by a lack of wind. Today’s winner was Horacio Pavez’s Mitsubishi. Eduardo Souza Ramos’ Phoenix achieved a fourth position in the race and continues leading the overall, with only two points less than Jorge Araneda’s Santander.

The delay was long, first warning signal was scheduled at 1 pm CLST but due to lack of wind the Race Committee decided to send the fleet back to port and wait for better conditions to set the course and start the competition. The fourth race of the event finally started near 5:30 pm with a 10 knots S wind.

Santander started leading the fleet and was the first to tack the first three marks, but in the last leg Horacio Pavez’s boat managed to overcome it and cross the finish line firstly. Santander arrived after it, followed by Dag Von Appen’s Itaú and Phoenix.

The Off Valparaíso Race is the first stage of the Soto 40 South American Tour and the second date of the Chile’s Nacional Oceánico Championship. The Soto 40 that are competing in the event are Apolonia, Estampa DelVIento, Itaú, Mitsubishi, Phoenix, Pisco Black, Reloaded and Santander.

With four races, Phoenix adds 10 points and is still top position overall, but now Santander is only two points behind. One more unit has Itaú, so tomorrow we’ll watch a tough race in Valparaíso waters among the teams that compete in the event.
