46th ACT Flying Fifteen International Championship at Canberra YC

by Matt Gleeson on 10 Oct 2014
46th ACT Flying Fifteen International Championship Matt Gleeson
Over the 4-5 October 2014, Canberra Yacht Club was blessed with warmth and wind to host the 46th ACT Flying Fifteen Championship. The ACT Flying Fifteen Association welcomed the seven Victorian and one Queensland crew which had come to challenge the local crews in a 15 boat fleet competing in an eight race series conducted over three sessions.

Whilst challenged at various stages during several of the races, the national champions Matthew Owen and Andrew Reed reigned supreme taking out the Championship, winning six of the eight races. Visitors from Davey’s Bay, Susan Thompson and Cameron Taylor, took second place in the Championship in a close tussle between placegetters which was not resolved until the last race. Third on the podium, David Williamson from Mordialloc with crew Craig Morton, reported that, in this his tenth trip to Canberra, finally he had done well enough to take home a prize. Many participants reported that the regatta was a great start to their sailing season.

Racing started on the Saturday at 11am and three races were undertaken using course T—the windward return, triangle, windward return course—with an eight knot breeze flicking from NNW to NWW. In races taking less than 25 minutes, the competitors who started well, best picking the wind changes, jumped to the lead. Matt and Andrew damaged their kite in race 2 but quickly ran ashore re- equipping themselves for race 3.

After a comfort stop and sandwiches in the newly refurbished sailors’ cabin, competitors headed out for another session of three races entertaining the wedding party and picnickers in front of the club. The wind remained about 10 to 12 knots for two course T races and a longer course R—windward return—race in which a good choice of sides of the course was rewarded. Over the break Peter Forster and Neal Davis’s re-assembly of their rig tension released more speed into Relience Ffeighteen which was to become more apparent as the regatta progressed. Dining that night involved a choice of the yacht club restaurant or a Canberra icon bistro. Six races had been more than enough and most crews called it an early night.

On Sunday racing was postponed for 40 minutes waiting for the wind to arrive—perhaps it had not been notified of the commencement of daylight saving? Race 7 was a longer T course of 45 minutes before Race Officer Neil Garvey decided to take us to an area of water where during the 1970s and 80s there was fixed course mark. It was a course R with a buoy off Sullivans Creek entrance. Bullets of 18–20 knots and radical wind shifts spread then reclustered the fleet. On the first work Sid Mishra found himself in unfamiliar territory leading the fleet before Peter Forster, possibly the only one who had ever sailed in this corner of the lake, jumped to the lead and then caught a bullet for the downwind run, taking the lead and winning the race with, interestingly, the oldest boat participating (3594).
