Soling North American Championship concludes on Lake Erie

by Canadian International Soling Association on 22 Sep 2014
CAN 1 Abbott, Davis, Abbott on windy Sunday. Soling
After the storm at the Soling North Americans, that helped calm down the youngs and the music late at night, the wind moved to the west; Early in the morning it was blowing around 20 knots.

Not all teams went out, probably due to the hangover of the precious night but also because conditions were pretty much similar than Saturday, but since it moved west, the entrance of the harbor was easier with only 2mts of waves braking almost like in the beach...

Only 17 boats started the first race, the first to round the windward mark was GER 1 with Koch, Parsons and Malpass, followed by the fantastic Canadians CAN 225 Hall, Davis, Hall then CAN 230 Fogh, Cheer and Devries and CAN 1 with the Abbott family. This race saw the wind increase in such way that many boats had trouble at the second downwind, with gusts of 39.5 knots measured at the race committee, with Solings surfing like never seen, and people swimming too.

CAN 225 sailing in super shape, managed to pass GER 1 and finish first ahead CAN 1 and CAN 230, while GER 1 finished fourth from only 13 boats finishing the race.

The last race of the championship already blowing like hell with about 30 knots saw only 10 boats finish the race, with CAN 1 showing their experience and CAN 230 in second and GER 1 in third, CAN 225 with the numbers secured, didn't finish but were crowned the 2014 North American Champions.

CAN 1 with Bill Abbott, Joanne Abbott and Larry Abbott took the second place ahead of CAN 230 with Thomas Fogh, Roger Cheer and Roger Devries. These three fantastic teams showed the good work being done in Canada, keeping the supremacy in North America.

USA 818 with John Kennedy, Brendan Kennedy and Claudio Martin won the red fleet and the spinnaker offered by Kanter Marine the main sponsor of the event.

The Classic trophy was won by GER 328 with Michael Dietzel, Tim Shuette and Hannes Ramoser.
The woman prize was a Michael Hill Jewlery watch awarded to Joanne Abbott.

And although I forbid to talk about myself now writing, Sigried Dietzel and Karen Temple deserve a mention, the girls that crewed were so happy with the surfing that the hangover ended when the adrenalin came up, surfing with the spinnaker or without it, they behave on the rail and although not droop hiking (something USA 853 didn't see during the whole event), at some point they were sailing ahead of too many boats...Sigrid words: - It was the wildest ride I ever made sailing in my life... well Karen, with her fifth time in a Soling just couldn't stop smiling and was unable to take the gloves out once the day was finished...
