Upper Midwest sailors need help to take it to the next level

by Elli Ansari on 14 Sep 2014
Wayzata Community Sailing Center
It's launch time! Where does that next generation of sailors come from? Where can a kid get inspired to be a leader and a team mate? Where can a disabled sailor get adaptive training to enjoy sailing? How do you sail if you don't have a boat? Where do people come to keep the sport alive and growing?

The Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC) is one of US Sailing's certified community sailing centers in the country. Our motto is sailing for everyone. It's where the passion starts and the fever takes over for this incredible sport. WCSC is sitting on incredible inland shoreline with a great fleet--and 124 year old building who has seen one too many Minnesota winters.

The Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC) building is aging quickly despite efforts to keep her intact. Now the windows on our old house are giving out, the shakes are heavy with patches and paint, the leaks are too many to be plugged and critters have made their nests in the rafters.

We've got grand plans and can do so much more for the Upper Midwest community if we had proper facilities. With an expanded and better equipped building, handicap access, gathering rooms for dry-land classes, lab and kitchen facilities we can teach sailing and bring forth the life lessons only sailing can teach.

We are trying to invite the world wide sailing community to help us kick off the replacement of the building at our Indiegogo campaign site.

We've got a match grant that doubles our efforts but one of the criteria of the match is that community needs to demonstrate interest. We hope to bring together the larger maritime community so that we can continue to reach out and bring sailing and all it has to teach to more people in more ways. We've got talented staff, a home port, a good and growing fleet and benchmark programming. Now we just need a building that allows us to do year round programming including STEM programs, skills training and community events.

Everything you can do to share, give, or push forward our goal is much appreciated! If you cannot give at this time, please do your best to share our story with someone.
