There were two types of high-speed vessels travelling from Magnetic Island to Townsville yesterday. One was the Sealink high-speed catamaran ferry. The other were the competitors in the inaugural Sail Townsville Magnetic Island to Townsville kite board race.
The Sealink Ferry takes only 20 minutes to cover the six nautical miles.
Thanks to the near perfect conditions Jason Crane from Sydney won the kite board race in just 13 minutes 30 seconds ! He was followed closely by Townsville’s Marvin Baumiester-Schoenian and Alty Frisby from Perth.
Jason averaged over 26 knots for the journey across Cleveland Bay to the finish off Townsville’s magnificent Strand. The ride had the competitors talking excitedly for hours afterwards at the Townsville Sailing Club with all vowing to come back and do it again next year !
