Russia leads 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 Circuit ahead of Rolex Swan Cup

by Gazprom Swan 60 Class on 22 Aug 2014
2014 Gazprom Swan 60 World Champions Bronenosec will be returning to Porto Cervo to race in the 2014 Rolex Swan Cup Nautor's Swan/Carlo Borlenghi
The 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 Circuit will be drawing to a finish next month, with the final event of the series running in conjunction with the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo at the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). The 2014 racing has been dominated by the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club backed team from Russia on board Swan 60 Bronenosec.

Clean wins in two out of the three events of the Gazprom Swan 60 Class series ensures a comfortable lead for Vladimir Liubomirov’s Bronenosec. The 2013 and now 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 World Champion as well as 2014 Nord Stream Race victors, lead the overall 2014 circuit by three points.

Swan 60 Bronenosec has been closely followed round the international race courses by Swan 60 Spirit of Europe and Mr Fan’s Windward jointly sitting second on the 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 Class circuit with five points.

Vladimir Liubomirov will work conservatively at the Rolex Swan Cup to prioritise his overall circuit result over individual race scenarios. His team is headed for a well-deserved second consecutive circuit win this year and is in high spirits moving into the final event.

Tomasso Chieffi, Tactician, Bronenosec has been with the team since 2012 and is confident ahead of Rolex Swan Cup starting on the 8th September. 'Gazprom Swan 60 racing at the Rolex Swan Cup is going to be IRC so a different scenario from our World Championship event. It will however, be very close racing again and there are probably bigger breezes on the agenda for Porto Cervo. I was pleased that the final day of racing in Palma Bay, peaking at just over 20 knots, gave us some experience of what is to come for our final 2014 Gazprom Swan 60 Class circuit event and it was ideal to build up the team’s confidence for legendary ‘bomb alley’.'

Swan 60 Bronenosec are currently testing the waters in Sardinia as they race in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in the mini-maxi racing cruising division, practising on the waters in Porto Cervo will help them to create some strong competition for the Rolex Swan Cup.
