2014 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships - Fast and Furious on Day 3

by Jake Fish on 14 Aug 2014 At the 2014 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships it was a fast and furious Wednesday on Lake St. Clair. The talented 156 sailors, race committee and Grosse Pointe Yacht Club volunteers exhaled this morning, as they were graced with fantastic sailing conditions for the first time this week.

Sustained winds between 13 and 18 knots under sunny skies and temperatures in the low-70s provided great sailing for everyone involved in this US Sailing National Championship. However, the conditions were extremely challenging with unpredictable puffs and shifts throughout the day.

New champions will be decided on Thursday. Start times have been bumped up an hour to 10:00 am EDT.

29er

The 29ers have been, by far, the busiest of the five classes. After posting four races on Tuesday, they completed six more today. The day belonged to Nicolas Muller (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Ian MacDiarmid (Delray Beach, Fla.), who won four of six races. They take just a one point lead over Max Brill (San Diego, Calif.) and Zach Malcolm (Imperial Beach, Calif.) into Thursday.

Chris Keller (Riverside, Conn.) and Peter Schneider (Greenwich, Conn.) have three point advantage in the International 420 fleet through five races. James Westerberg (Riverside, Conn) Pierce Ornstein (Old Greenwich, Conn.) are tied for second place with Kristopher Swanson (Kentfield, Calif.) and Alexander Ron (Houston, Texas).
