Classics Rally in Falmouth - historic and spectacular this weekend

by Nancy Knudsen on 13 Jun 2014
Falmouth Classics - Hardiesse SW
If you are lucky enough to be anywhere near Falmouth in Britain this weekend, you won't want to miss the Classics Rally and Regatta, described by those who know as a three day sailing Bonanza of more than 100 boats. Certainly it will bring together classic boats from across the European continent and many parts of Britain. Not lucky enough to be there? Enjoy the images:

According to WestBriton boats built as long ago as 1882 and lovingly restored take their place alongside many more launched before the Second World War and other more modern versions of the classic designs.

The highlight of the regatta is the Parade Of Sail And Power. After the horrendous weather of last year's event, the organisers have upped the stakes and moved the parade out of the inner harbour and into Carrick Roads.

This will enable the larger boats to take part, making the magnificent spectacle of Pilot Cutters, Working Boats and other traditional craft under full sail.

The parade will be headed by the Falmouth sail training ship, Hardiesse, and the Gaff Yawl, Germaine, built in 1882 and sailed over from Douarnenez for the event (both pictured).

As part of the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, running over the same weekend, there will be a shanty group, the Wareham Whalers, singing at the castle and a commentary about the parade on VHF Channel 69 for the local and visiting yachtsmen.

For those who are landbound but can make it to watch the spectacle, the parade can be seen to best advantage from Pendennis Point, Pendennis Castle, Castle Drive and Trefusis Point. Representatives of Falmouth Classics will be on hand in Pendennis Point car park and at the castle to explain to the general public as the boats progress past.
