Audi-Tron Melges 20 Sailing Series - Tied at the top after day 1

by Joy Dunigan on 1 Jun 2014
Audi Tron Melges 20 Sailing Series Talamone BPSE - Zerogradinard
Three races have now been completed in Talamone at the 2014 Melges 20 Audi-Tron Sailing Series with American Wes Whitmyer on Slingshot and Achille Onorato on Mascalzone Latino Jr. battling it out to land first and second respectively in the overall standings tied with equal points. Seated third is current Series leader Dario Levi on Fremito d'Arja, Pasquale Orofino on Raffica in fourth and Mirko de Falco's Peccere is fifth.

With a steady breeze from the Northwest, the larger-than-life Audi Melges 20 fleet reveled in a pleasant 8-14 knots with periodic peaks over 20. Although Onorato aggressively won the first race of the day, Whitmyer came back to win Race Two. It was no surprise to see Guido Miani's Monaco Racing Fleet/Out of Reach team powered up and in full force to take the win of Race Three.

Only six points separate the top five overall teams, so Sunday's last three races will present the ultimate showdown. With the completion of six races, each team will be permitted one discard of their worst score.

Audi Melges 20 owners and teams enjoy only the very best in the world, special thanks to Torqueedo electric outboard motors. Every competing boat will enjoy the 100% environmentally friendly units for the duration of the 2014 Audi-Tron Sailing Series.
