The Classe Mini circuit is in full swing again, and 26-year-old Australian skipper Katrina Ham is delighted to be taking part in her first race of the year, the 500 mile 'Mini en Mai' which starts today (20 May 2014).
Despite the tragic loss of her boat during the 2013 Mini Transat, Katrina is still following her dream and embarking on a new campaign with the ultimate goal of completing the 2015 Mini Transat.
Katrina has been working hard over the winter at her base in Lorient, France. She has a new boat 'X Wing', a Pogo 2 designed series boat, and has received continued support from Pantaenius Australia enabling her to compete throughout 2014.
'It is brilliant to be back sailing!' says Katrina. 'Finishing the Mini Transat is still my objective and I know that if I am not trying to step towards it, I will be doing something else half-hearted. I still have the dream and the determination and fully intend to be on both the start line and the finish line in 2015.'
In order to qualify for the Mini Transat, every skipper must complete 1000 nautical miles of official Classe Mini races, as well as a 1000 nautical mile solo non-stop qualification passage – all of which must be done on the same boat the skipper will race in the Transat. The race is always over-subscribed and with the new season already underway, the clock is ticking to get the qualification miles completed.
Katrina is looking for partners to join her on the ride to the 2015 Mini Transat. Visit http://www.katrinahamracing.com/blog/, www.facebook.com/KatrinaHamRacing or @KatrinaHam on twitter to follow Katrina to the finish line in 2015!
