Perfect sailing conditions in the 14th annual City of Hope Regatta

by Andy Kopetzky on 20 May 2014
Overall winner Lee Lewis - 14th Annual City of Hope Regatta Tami Rae
Twenty five boats participated in the City of Hope Regatta 2014 on Sunday May 18 in Santa Monica Bay on the ten and a half mile course. The breeze hovered around 10-12 knots and seas were fairly flat with no big swells.

The two-day benefit featured a crab feast, and silent and live auctions and a raffle Saturday and racing Sunday. There were three classes: Catalina 42, PHRF and Cruiser.

Lee Lewis sailing Star Seal took line honors. Sailing a Catalina 42 Lewis sailed the course in a little over an hour and a half. Event chairman Norm Perron took third place in class in his Catalina 42 Aphrodisiac.

PHRF was taken by the redoubtable Curt Johnson on Avet. Johnson has won a considerable amount of trophies in his J 80.

Joe Cowan won Cruiser division with his Cal 40 Crossfire.

The City of Hope event is organized by Del Rey and Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Clubs and the Marina Del Rey Chapter of City of Hope to raise money for improved therapies and cures for life threatening illnesses like cancer, diabetes and HIV-AIDS.

A special trophy was awarded to Richard Cincinelli and Janet Bubar-Rich of Smooth Sailing II for raising $2700 for the City of Hope.
