Devoti D-One Europeans heading to UK waters

by GBR D-One Class Association on 2 May 2014
D-One Europeans 2014 Devoti Sailing
Online entry is open for the D-One Europeans to be hosted by Brightlingsea SC from 27th to 29th June 2014 sponsored by Suntouched Sailboats and Devoti Sailing. The entry website is the location for all official documents, news, entry list, meal bookings, photos, social media feed and more.

The D-One fleet goes from strength to strength with club fleets growing across the UK and good number of new boats already entering the country for the 2014 season. Having been accepted as an RYA registered class just two years ago the singlehanded hiking asymmetric is gaining momentum throughout the UK, together with a very strong European following in Italy, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

Reflecting the influence of the strong Italian fleet, who plan to travel across to the event in their numbers, the sailors will be greeted by a prompt pasta supper as they come off the water on all three days of the Championship. This will be combined with some great evening socials that should offer something for everyone.

A competition was run at the 2014 RYA Dinghy Show where one lucky winner would be offered the use of a D-One for the Europeans, sponsored by Suntouched Sailboats. The winner was 15 year old Cameron Tweedle from Oxford Sailing Club. Since the Dinghy Show Cameron has attended the D-One training day at Oxford and is up for the challenge! When asked how he felt about being offered the boat Cameron replied 'I’m absolutely delighted to have been given this opportunity by Suntouched and the Class Association. This really is a fantastic chance for me to go and race against some of the world’s best sailors at the Europeans. I’ve sailed the D-One a couple of times now and it’s been brilliant training with the likes of Charlie Cumbley and Nick Craig.'

Although only 15, Cameron already stands at 6ft 3' tall, weighing 82kg and races as part of the RYA Laser Standard Youth Squad. At last year’s D-One Gold Cup sailors in the top five ranged in weight from 74kg through to 118kg demonstrating the versatility of the D-One rig.

With Devoti built hulls and North supplied sails, the D-One class has a thoroughbred feel about it which has not been overlooked by some of the country’s finest dinghy sailors. At the 2013 Endeavour Trophy there were three D-One Nationals winners – not only 2013 champion Charlie Chandler representing the class, but also previous champions Nick Craig and Charlie Cumbley. The Europeans should be a great event!
