Surf Worldcup - Chiemsee European Tow-in Championship staged

by EFPT on 26 Apr 2014 After years and years at the Surf Worldcup where we have been spoilt with the best possible conditions, south wind, warm weather and sunshine, April 2014 has been showing us all of its facets since our arrival at Podersdorf. Today though, not even a bit of rain and moody skies could diminish the good atmosphere at the beach while the first fleet of the annual Chiemsee European Tow-in Championship was staged.

With only nine riders being drawn into the first round, the chance to get to the final seemed to be a better one. If you looked at the names though, it became quite obvious that the performance of every single rider would have to be the best possible one, since names like Tonky Frans (Tabou/Gaastra), tow-in expert from France Nico Akgazciyan and highly talented Amado Vrieswijk (Starboard), Adam Sims (Sailloft/Patrik) and Max Rowe (North/Fanatic) were in the draw. Next to those names also some young riders like Antoine Albert (Tabou/Gaastra), Julian Wiemar (Starboard), Yentel Caers (North/Fanatic) and Romain Pinocheau (F2) have their chance today.

After coming third in the qualification at the tow-in in Browersdam (DAM7), it wasn’t very surprising that Adam Sims (Sailloft/Patrik) improved even more through the winter months. The former UK freestyle champion spent two months in South Africa where he trained in waves and freestyle. The time following his winter trip was used for some tow-in training with a special winch. In the competition today, he landed the most perfect funell into air-funell 720 right in front of the judges. With 46,5 points he got the highest score of the first run and stayed unbeatable even through the second round.

With a funnel into burner Tonky Frans (Gaastra/Tabou) from Bonaire made it to second place and will have his chance to fight for the 5.000€ prize money in the big final on Wednesday evening, where we’ll see a night tow-in show.

Amado Vrieswijk (Starboard) from Bonaire landed a clean funnel into funell and completes the first top three of the three tow-in fleets.

Max Rowe (North/Fanatic) just missed the final by one point. He tried to impress with a burner one-handed but couldn’t quite make the end of it.

17 year old Julian Wiemar (Starboard) from Germany had a great debut today and showed a lot of coolness competing with the pros. It will be very exciting to watch on how he will progress through the coming seasons.
