Belcher and Ryan lead from the start in Hyeres

by Rob Kothe and the Sail-World Team on 22 Apr 2014
ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca - Mat Belcher and Will Ryan (AUS), 470 Men Martinez Studio / Sofia http://www.trofeoprincesasofia.org/
Olympic Gold Medallist and 2013 ISAF World Sailor of the Year Mat Belcher is leading a very strong Australian team into the last ISAF Sailing World Cup of the 2013-2014 season.

Having had his 18 regatta winning streak broken in Miami, Belcher and his crew Will Ryan are looking to defend their Hyeres win of 2013.

You can’t win a regatta in the first day, but an early OCS can affect your sailing strategy for the week. That’s what happened to ISAF World Sailor of the Year Matt Belcher and crew Will Ryan in Palma.

But today they had a much better start and are back on track with two bullets and a dropped seventh on day one

Belcher commented ‘A good start is what we were looking for and we have that. We are looking for a better result than the third and second we’ve had in the last two World Cup events.

‘Expectations continue to be high. It’s probably over four years ago, since we missed the podium, I would say beginning of 2011. Quite a while. Almost 30 events.

Will Ryan 'We had an OCS early in Palma. You learn a lot about your team when you have a little set back like that. We sailed well after that. It makes you focus more. It is part of the process and ultimately the goal is still a little way away so whatever lessons we can learn now the better.‘
