Pantaenius 2022 - SAIL & POWER 1 LEADERBOARD AUS

A forty two year old record remains unbeaten, just!

by Nigel Statham on 22 Apr 2014
Black Jack - QantasLink Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race 2014 Queensland Cruising Yacht Club
Not since Cyclone Emily in 1972 has the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race seen such a large percentage of its fleet retire before reaching Gladstone.

In that year, just 20% of the fleet successfully battled the high winds and large seas to cross the finish line. In stark contrast, the 2014 edition of the race fell foul to the complete opposite; a complete lack of breeze but, the result was much the same with over 50% of the fleet pulling the pin before the finish.

The first yacht home was the Volvo 70, Black Jack skippered by Mark Bradford with an elapsed time of one day and just under ten hours.

Barely an hour later had the second boat, Alive skippered by Duncan Hine, crossed the line. Then it became a waiting game. It took almost a full twenty four hour period before anyone else crossed the finish line and another twenty four hours after that before Wistari, the last boat still racing finally finished the marathon; a truly deserving recipient on the Endurance Trophy.

Given the massive gap between the first two boats and the rest of the fleet who all parked up for hours around the top of Fraser Island, it is unsurprising that the two of them claimed just about every major trophy between them including the prestigious Courier Mail Cup which went to Alive in their first attempt at a major yacht race.

However, just to prove that handicap yacht racing really can work, up until the last few hours of Wistari’s trip, the race organisers were still unable to call the final results in a number of divisions thanks to the strong possibilities of Wistari beating the odds and taking a placing.

And so ends the QantasLink 66th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. After a couple of years of light winds, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club is already looking forward to a record breaking year during Easter 2015.
