Coastal Cup sets sail from Alameda June 11

The various coastal breezes and fabulous scenery of the West Coast of California await entrants of the 23rd annual Coastal Cup.

The Coastal Cup ocean race from San Francisco to Southern California will be returning to Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles. The beautiful Del Rey Yacht Club is partnering with Encinal Yacht Club once again, and will host the boats as they finish this exciting and challenging race. The starts will be conducted from the St. Francis Yacht Club race deck and are scheduled for June 11th, 12th and 13th; the Awards party is June 14.

The race is open to crewed as well as shorthanded entries and multihulls. In addition, the race will use a modified PHRF rating system, as used in last year’s competition, which averages northern and southern PHRF ratings to account for the sailing conditions in northern and southern zones of the California coast; last year’s winners were a good mixture of vessels from both regions. This year we have included Ocean Racing Catamaran Association (ORCA) Ocean Level requirements to encourage participation from multihull boats and opened a third start, on June 13th, for multihulls.

The Notice of Race (NOR) and the link to the on-line registration form is available on the Coastal Cup website.

There is a Safety at Sea requirement for this USSER US Ocean Level race. For Northern California, the Pacific Cup Yacht Club will be hosting a qualifying seminar at Encinal Yacht Club on May 18, 2014; for information see Pacific Cup. Please refer to US Sailing website for other possible courses in your area.

A mandatory Skipper’s Meeting will held at 17:00 on Sunday June 8th and a buffet dinner will also be available for approximately $20.00 per person. For further information, contact EYC Vice Commodore John Hemiup at jhemiup@yahoo.com. Encinal and Del Rey yacht clubs look forward to again hosting this renowned race. If Skippers need assistance in transporting Delivery Sails back to EYC or Del Rey, contact John who can rent a trailer to assist in Encinal YC Del Rey YC website
