Clipper Race 2013-14 – Day six from Race Leader

by Clipper Round The World Yacht Race on 24 Mar 2014 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race 2013-14 - The skipper of the leading boat Great Britain, Simon Talbot reports 'We are moving again, hooray! So after spending what felt like an eternity gently bobbing around, drifting with the Kuroshio (Black Snake) Current, early this morning the wind finally started to fill and we were finally off sailing in the right direction again with reasonable boat speed.

This was long overdue and very welcome to all on board. Thankfully, it looks like this new breeze is set to stay with us for a reasonable period of time as some more settled, high pressure dominated, weather takes hold over the North West Pacific during the next few days, until the next big low pressure system is born and heads our way to spoil the party!

I think all the crew found yesterday's calmer conditions a welcome break from the bashing we had taken over the proceeding couple of days, but it is funny how quickly the novelty of bobbing around, hunting for wind wears off and everyone has welcomed the return of the whooshing sound as the good ship Great Britain speeds through the water.

Racing wise, the new wind seems to have filled in from the north meaning that it arrived with us slightly earlier than for those positioned further south than us, allowing as to move back up the leaderboard and claw back some of the miles we lost in the wind hole off of the south of Japan. This was very welcome news for our tired crew this morning, meaning that all their hard work over night had been well worthwhile and really had made a difference.

So we now find ourselves in clear open ocean, with the sun shining and the next land mass we hope to see being North America in approximately 4,250 miles. Let us just hope that the rest of this leg continues to deliver such great rewards as the first week has done and that we continue to make good speed without needing to get too battered by the passing adolescent storm systems!

We all miss you and will continue to do our best for you, but in exchange we need you to keep sending the fair winds and favourable currents. You have done an amazing job so far and we love your support, so please keep up the good work.
