The Victorian Championships for the Jubilee class were held over the Labour Day holiday weekend at Royal Brighton Yacht Club.
Although the regatta only drew a small fleet of five boats from RBYC and Ballarat Yacht Club, there was some close racing over the three days.
The Race Management Team was able to complete all eight scheduled races despite the challenging shifty conditions over the three days. Breezes ranged from five to 15 knots.
Current Australian Champion, Scorpion (Charles Weatherly, Di Weatherly and Colin Littlejohn), won five of the eight race series to claim the State Championship and JA Linacre Trophy with a four point margin over Andiamo (Bob McDonald, Chris Bland and Graham Stanley). Balcombe Bay (Michael Morrow, Leslie Davis and Brenda Morrow) were third.
Weatherly and crew also claimed the Mornington Trophy for winning the final race of the series.
The Jubilee has been a very popular boat at Brighton and numerous other clubs for many years. The development of the Jubilee was led by then RBYC Commodore JA Linacre in 1935.
Usually sailed with a crew of three, the Jubilee is a stable all-weather 18 foot day boat, designed and built specifically to suit Port Phillip. It’s a one-design class and the first one ever built is still sailing and competitive.
