There were shouts of Ole, Ole, Ole on the water today as the newest addition to Spain’s fleet of sailing boats won overall honours in the Racing Class 1 in the annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.
Plis Play, which was only launched just over a week ago, finished the Regatta with 12 points after a third place finish today to beat Clariden-Karakoa, which finished with 15 points, and former winner Neil Pryde, whose boat Hi Fidelity finished third with 16 points.
With an incredible performance in the IRC based Racing Class 2-Sports Boats division, Jeremy Muller’s Sydney 32, Scallywag finished first in every race apart from a dropped fourth place in the final race today. The Sydney 32 dominated this IRC division to easily win overall honours with a perfect score of just six points.
A distant second in the Racing 2-Sports Boats division was Stuart Harrison’s Mumm 30, Panic! with 12 points, followed by David Hamilton’s Mumm 30, Luk Loma with 17.
In the hotly-contested Premier Cruising Class, John Wardill’s Australian Maid’s third place finish today was enough to give it overall honours with 10 points. Hot on his heels was Marcel Liedts’ Hocux Pocux 2 with 11 points and George Olivit’s Big Buzzard.
A first place in today’s final race was enough to get overall honours for David Lindahl’s La Samudra, which finished the IRC 1 Class with 11 points. Thai sailor Viroj Nualkhair’s Octopussy was second in the class with 13 points, followed by John Vause on Ruby Tuesday with 15.
It was a Thai one-two in the IRC 2 Class with the Royal Thai Navy 1 boat finishing first on 4 points and sister boat Royal Thai Navy 1 second on 5. Tracy Williams on Patrice III finished third on 9 points after a third place today.
Bob Ashman took the overall honours on Simba in the IRC 3 Class with a total of 4 points, his second place in today’s race helping him over the line, and Graham Lind’s Sumatra finished second overall on 7 points. Finishing first in today’s race was Stuart Crowe’s Cinders and that result was enough to bump him up to third overall in the class.
Media favourite Gladys Guttenburg, sailed by Ray Bradshaw, was the runnaway winner in the Ocean Rover division after winning every race and finishing with 4 points. George Johannes’ Ok-La sailed well to finish second on 8 points, followed by George Fenn’s The Four Winds on 11.
In the Classic Class, Stephen Pepperell’s Long White Cloud won every race but one to get a stranglehold on the division and take overall honours with 4 points. Julian Hill’s Sanook took second with 9 points and Claus Karthe’s Greensleeves finished third on 12.
Lattitude 8 Cyrene with Mark Pescott at the wheel finished first in the Multihull Class after a second today which earned him a total of 5 points, and close behind was King’s Cup regular Radab Kanjanavit on Cedar Swan with 8 points. Phil Atkinson’s fast cat Fine Pitch was third with 10 points.
