EPIRB's and Wet Weather Gear Hire

by Rob Kothe on 8 Dec 2003
Yacht owners and sailors who go to sea only once or twice a year can hire EPIRBs, wet weather gear and other safety equipment from Sydney based EPIRBhire, run by Peter and Caroline Davidson.

The company hires 121.5mhz, and the new 406Mhz personal beacons to bushwalkers, canoeists and ocean-racing crew.

For Category 1 racing, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart race, a boat EPIRB and a PLB per crew member is compulsory.

For Category 2 racing, the Strathfield Pittwater to Coffs race, the EPIRB is compulsory yet the PLB is only recommended.

These days there is no reason to go to sea without an EPIRB or PLB.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s archives are full of examples of long, fruitless expensive searches that are mirrored by examples of successful searches when a rescue beacon is involved.

Many of us know of fellow sailors whose lives have been saved or lost while at sea.

Motivated by the tragic loss of Excalibur in September 2002 while on a return trip from The Whitsundays, Peter and Caroline established the business to make PLBs available to owners and crew for less than the cost of two jugs of rum and coke, knowing that one day a hired beacon will save someone’s life.

Since that time the business has expanded to provide 406Mhz EPIRBs and the incredibly efficient digital 406Mhz PLBs with GPS engine. Also available for hire - wet weather gear, handheld VHF radios, GPS, and a range of other yachting services.

A quick phone call or an email is all it takes to book, and Epirbhire will deliver within Australia, within 24 hrs if necessary.
