Seasickness glasses wins DAME award

by Sail-World Cruising on 7 Dec 2013
Nominated for a DAME award for innovation SW
One of our recent 'Products of the Week' was the strangely-named Boarding Ring, and it has now won a coveted DAME Award, the world's number one international design competition for new marine equipment and accessories.

One of the scourges for those who wish to go to sea is seasickness. Even the most experienced of sailors can be overwhelmed at times. Now a company which has created an amazing new solution has won a DAME Award, in the category of 'Clothing ad crew accessories.

The Awards, for innovative new products, have enormous industry prestige and a worldwide commercial impact. To win the DAME is the ultimate accolade for companies and innovators, and all the nominations for the award are seen as trendsetters for the next generation of product development.

Here is what the judges had to say about Boarding Ring: Category: Clothing and crew accessiores:
Offered in several models including child and sunglass versions, the common feature of boarding ring glasses is that they provide a virtual horizon in the peripheral field of view of the wearer. They are used to cure motion sickness when symptoms appear. All models except the sunglass type can be worn over prescription lenses. The Jury didn’t consider boarding ring glasses to be a fashion statement but also understands when you are sea sick that doesn’t matter! It welcomes the launch of an innovative solution, strong on functional design, which focuses on improving crew comfort at sea.

How do they work? The manufacturer explains that motion sickness is caused by a sensorial conflict between eyes and inner ears. The liquid levels inside the glasses show a 'virtual horizon' to the peripheral field of view, following the real motion which is felt by inner ears.

It is claimed that the glasses avoid, definitively and permanently, motion sickness. They also recommend that you should not simultaneously take medication, as this will negate the effect of the glasses.

Amazing? Yes, certainly and well worth trying for those who are afflicted. (ANYTHING is worth trying, as all those who suffer will agree.)
