Interesting times - with the Australians on the America's Cup circuit

by Rob Kothe and the Sail-World team on 15 Nov 2013
Oracle Team USA: Tom Slingsby Carlo Borlenghi/Luna Rossa http://www.lunarossachallenge.com
We've had a long talk with Tom Slingsby who confirmed with us yesterday that he has signed with Oracle Team USA, with a possible Rio Finn campaign not on the calendar. We are close to the action and its interesting to see the broader take from Richard Gladwell (RG).

Just called Jimmy Spithill in San Francisco expecting to hear that he too had re-signed with the local team but was surprised to hear he is still talking to a number of possible challengers. Jimmy expects to have finalised his plans within a couple of weeks.

We will be posting our extended interviews with both of the guys over the weekend. Up ahead we have the 2013 Laser Worlds which will kick-off on Sunday in Oman.

Its a rockstar fleet with 46 of the world’s top 50 ISAF ranked Laser Standard Men’s sailors including Olympic, World and National champions from 48 countries.

With five Australians in the current World Ranking’s top fifteen, Tom Burton is ranked number one in the world. expectations are high for the Australian Sailing Team and Squad members. But look out for Robert Scheidt!

Plenty of news from the Australian Etchells titles, with John Curnow and Tracy Johnston giving us their own angles.

Heading to Amsterdam next week for METS, THE marine tradeshow.

Then its back to Oz for the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne, then back to Sydney ahead of S2H.

More news as always, have a great Friday and a windy weekend.
