MC38 Australian Championship - Voodoo Chile claims their first Title

by McConaghy Boats on 14 Nov 2013 In the MC38 Australian Championship, Tasmanian skipper Andrew Hunn helmed his Voodoo Chile crew to victory this weekend, winning the title on a count back after finishing the Championship on equal points with Leslie Green’s Ginger.

Stepping onboard the MC38 for the first time on Saturday morning, Voodoo Chile set the scene with a fantastic start in the first race, showing incredible pace around the track to take their first win. In Race two the 2012 Australian Champion John Bacon’s Dark Star applied great pressure on Voodoo Chile but it wasn’t quite enough missing out on first place by seconds.

The Passage Race saw the wind get up to 22 knots, with tactician Malcolm Page guiding Ginger to her first win. 'I had so much fun' said Leslie 'I couldn’t be happier'.

Ross Hennessy’s Ghost Rider had a good start to Sunday’s racing but it was Hamilton Island Winner Chris Hancock that fought back with their first win of the event in race five.

With two races to go the Championship Title was still in reach for the top four boats. Ginger won the second last race bumping Voodoo Chile off the top of the leader board. Ginger and Voodoo Chile engaged in some very exciting match racing in the last race, however it was Vino that beat them to the finish, with Voodoo Chile winning the Championship on a count back.

The weekend yet again highlighted the fantastic racing that is had in the MC38 Class, everyone had a brilliant time. This is the fifth event for the class in 11 months with a different winner on four occasions, a testament to the closed One Design rule proving that it’s all about how you sail on the day.

The class is now looking forward to the next 12 months of events which includes the MC38 Worlds to be held in Auckland in November next year.
