Clipper Round the World Yacht Race- Great Britain first into Cape Town

by Clipper Ventures PLC on 27 Oct 2013
Great Britain - 2013-14 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race Clipper Ventures PLC . http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com
In the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, Great Britain has crossed the finish line by Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, taking line honours for Race 3 at just before 11am local time.

In second place, Henri Lloyd has overtaken Invest Africa, and is ahead of the home entry by six miles in the final push into Cape Town.

It is tight between the middle third of the fleet too, with just 34 miles separating OneDLL, Old Pulteney, Switzerland and Derry~Londonderry~Doire.

Great Britain had slowed right down in a wind hole off Table Mountain, and the south easterly winds around Cape Town itself will bring some tricky lees and funnels for the yachts arriving over the next day. The wind is also expected to back a point or so today making it more of a beat, but then to veer tomorrow freeing the yachts up.

Patrick Van der Zijden, skipper of Old Pulteney, currently in fifth place, describes the battle into Cape Town.

'Stealth Mode, that's the word of today, only we are not so stealthy because our nearest rivals are hot on our heels, meaning Switzerland and Derry~Londonderry~ Doire, chasing us for fifth place at the moment. It has been a close race and it will be till the finish line. 200 miles looks short after 3400 miles of sailing, but a lot can still happen.'
