49er and FX Worlds - Qualifying rounds continue

by Canadian sailing team on 26 Sep 2013
Jon Ladha and Dan Inkpen representing Canada are among the teams in action Canadian Sailing Team
At the 2013 49er & FX World Championships, Day two of light air skiff sailing wrapped up with mixed results for the Canadian teams. The men49er.org squeezed in three races on their second day of qualification.

Top 40 of the 97 boat fleet will be split into two for gold fleet racing. Jon Ladha and Dan Inkpenhad a much better day today posting 10, 15, 13 in the Red fleet. Unfortunately it was not enough to boost them into top 40 position after yesterday's gear breakdowns.

Ladha elaborates, 'We looked at a bunch of start line video and it's evident that we are not 110% confident in our line awareness and time/distance to the start line. In the last 20 seconds when we are doing our last bit of defending our starting lane we often lose sight of transits and by the time we get our heads back up we're a second late. Tomorrow, we will keep our heads up, decide on a time to go and then fully commit to accelerating at that time!' Battle continues in qualifying round two tomorrow.

The 49er FX women scored two races, except for blue fleet, as winds deteriorated throughout the day. Preliminary results after only one race had Erin Berry's team in 26th with Team Rafuse close behind in 31st.

Check out this video with Erin Berry's thoughts on today's conditions and overall racing for the day.

Tomorrow is another day of qualifying for the women, followed by semi-finals and finals wrapping up on September 29th.
