49er Worlds - Solid start for Canadian FX sailors

by Canadian sailing team on 25 Sep 2013
Erin Berry and Lauren Laventure at the 49er Worlds Canadian Sailing Team
The first day of 49er & FX World Championships did not exactly kick off with a bang. Despite the strong wind Mistral that swept through theBerry/Laventure area in recent weeks, light winds postponed the start and continued to plague the day with tricky conditions in Marseille.

The 49er men were first up on the water and the Canadians were mixed among the three fleet split. Jon Ladha/Dan Inkpen had a difficult first day in the yellow fleet as they suffered some gear failure. The next two qualifying days will be important as they regroup and focus on moving up on the results board. Dave Mori/Justin Barnes, sailing in the blue fleet, will also be looking at improving on todays overall score.

The FX sailors patiently waited for their turn and managed to fill in the day with two races under their belts. Leading the Canadian FX contingent is Erin Berry and Lauren Laventure currently sitting in 12th of the 53 boat fleet. Berry is optimistic after today explaining, 'For our first race, we had a tough start, but managed to make smart decisions and worked our way back to a fourth place finish! Overall, we had great communication in our boat today and we had really nice boat speed.' Erin Rafuse/Danielle Boyd also managed the tricky conditions posting a top 10 result to sitting 24th overall.

Forecast is calling for similar conditions for tomorrow with not much wind predicted all week long. Full story, results, live tracking, and video can be found here
