Ciudad de Santander Trophy - Mixed bag on day 3

by Helena de la Gándara on 12 Sep 2013
CIUDAD DE SANTANDER Trophy, ISAF sailing World Championships test event. Day 3 - Nacra 17 action Jesus Renedo/ Santander City Trophy http://www.santander2014.com/
The Ciudad de Santander Trophy, after celebrating the 470 and Finn classes' third round, second for Nacra 17, RS:X and 49er is on - more than half way through. The status of the third day has had quite different conditions, the horizon was clear of clouds and permanent wind from first hours of the morning.

With a slight delay for the starts of the race, all classes were able to sail and complete races, with a Northeast wind six knots average, and quite stable.

Alfa area:

Finn and Nacra 17: Situated in front of the beach of the Sardinero, and rotating with the 470 class. The multihull where able to complete three races, with a clear winner for the British team Ben Saxton and Hannaf Diamond with five points. In second place the Austrian team Thomas Zajac and Tanja Chiara with six points and in third place also British team Rupert White and Nicola Boniface, with also six points.

For the Finn class, they were able to celebrate two races, with no variations the general qualifications, so the New Zealand team Josh Junior is first, with two points followed by the Russian team Terpigorev Egor with four points and in third place the Spaniard Alejandro Muscat with six Points.

Bravo area:

470 Men and Women: With round about 100 boats on the starting line, the British team is begging to have an outstanding performance with Luke Patience and Joe Glanfield with seven points. In second place are the Finish team skippered by Joonas Lindgreen with 10 points followed by the Japs Jazuto Doi and Kimihiko Imamura with one more point.

As for woman category, dominated by the Autralians Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Katarzyna with four points after two races. In second place the American team Annie Haeger and Briana Provancha with seven points and in third place the Brits Sophie Wegelin and Eilidh McIntyre with 13 points.

Charlie area:

RS:X Men: Rotating with the Finn and Nacra class, the boards have a winner after today’s races the Dutch Dorian Van Rijsselberghe with five points. In second place the French Julien Bontemps with six points and the Spaniard Pastor with 11 points. The up to now leader from the French team Louis Giard has gone down to the seventh position.

In RS:X Woman, the French team are the clear dominators thanks to Charline Picon with three points. In second place the Israeli Maayan Davidovich with seven points and third the German Moana Delle with eight points.

The one opportunity for the Cantabrians and the visitors.

On Thursday, there will be a race area in the bay of Santander, while the official area of the Sardinero will continue with the four racing areas.

Foxtrot is the name, situated just in front of the Oceanographic Museum of Santander, and from which you will be able to see the 49er and 49er FX race from just a few meters away. An opportunity for the city to follow the races from such a short distance.

The idea is to try out this new area, since it will be the official during the weekend for the Medal Race finals. These races only have 10 competitors from each class that have classified.

The start for all racing areas will be at 13:00h, with Finn in Alfa area, Laser standard and Radial in Beta area, 470 (Men and Woman) in Charlie, Nacra and RS:X in Delta area and the 49er and 49er FX in Foxtrot.

Will the Northeast winds arrive?

Still waiting but it looks like that the forecast, in the next days, for the famous winds will gradually build up and hit us in the following days.

Ben Saxton (GBR) – Nacra 17: 'We had a good three races and it’s been good to be here and get some training in for next year. The first race was a little bit dodgy and light and the fleet turned inside out on itself and it was a bit of a lottery. We then had two great races in 10 knots of breeze, pretty cloud driven, and two great races for us.

'This event is much more of learning curve for us than anything else that’s high performance. We’re here trying to learn for next year and racing’s never bad for you. It’s what we do and the more you do the better you get.

'It’s a good atmosphere in the British Nacra 17 camp. We’re all very open and learning loads. The four of us just working together as a squad and hopefully in a year’s time we’ll have all four boats right up.'

Josh Junior (NZL) – Finn: 'I’ve come here to learn about the conditions and understand what the different race areas will be like and where they’re going to be and just learn. So far it’s been pretty interesting. There’s big waves, big chop, quite a lot of tide and land influence so it’s definitely a place you’d want to come back and visit and make sure you’re ready for next year.

'It’s important to qualify the country for the Olympic Games next year and to try and cement a spot as the Olympic representative. It will be the start of the selection for everyone.

'I’ve not seen a lot of the City of Santander yet but the boat park area is pretty mint and pretty easy, I like it.'
