Whitsunday Times reports that the Whitsunday-based Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club (SICYC) has secured a new sponsor for its annual Vice Commodore Rendezvous from August 22-25.

Abel Point Marina owner Paul Darrouzet has thrown his support behind the club, joining Mariner Boating Holidays, Cumberland Charter Yachts and Hogs Breath Australia as a major sponsor for its Prostate Cancer Foundation fundraising event.

Mr Darrouzet, who is the now the vice commodore of Surprise Rock, said he came across SICYC during last year's Whitsunday rendezvous, which he attended on his own boat Brahms Und Listz.

'There was a lot of people having a lot of fun and that's what boating's all about,' he said.

Just a couple of weeks ago he contacted SICYC founder Ken Thackeray, offering to contribute substantial prizes for this year's auctions and raffles, including a month's free berthing at the marina.

Mr Thackeray said he was ecstatic to have Mr Darrouzet and his staff on board for what promised to be a massive event.

'Last year we raised over $30,000 and this year we're hoping for even more,' he said.

The SICYC 2013 rendezvous starts with a meet and greet at Montes Reef Resort on Thursday, August 22.

Festivities continue with the Shag Islet party on Friday and Polynesian beach party on Saturday. Sunday's event is a pirate luncheon at the Dingo Beach Pub with proceeds donated to the Whitsunday Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR).
