WPA World Paddle Championships head for Vegas

by World Paddle Association on 24 Jul 2013
SW
The 2013 World Paddle Championships are set to take place at the Westin Lake Las Vegas, NV. Lake Las Vegas, a man-made lake 20 minutes east of the Las Vegas strip has 10 miles of shore line that will host the world's best stand up and prone paddlers on September 21, 2013.

Hennessey's, the first event series to embrace the sport of standup paddling in 2008, sees Lake Las Vegas as a great opportunity to take a major event to the interior of the U.S. and critical to the progression of the sport. 'We are extremely excited to take the Hennessey's-WPA World Championships to a very unique site like the Westin Lake Las Vegas and to show that you can have an exciting event on flat water.' Said Tim Ritter, race director for Hennessey's Racing, 'Hennessey's Racing has conducted paddling events for 19 years... to have the support of the Westin Lake Las Vegas and the Lake Las Vegas Master community shows the tremendous growth of the sport and locations that we can go.'

'We are thrilled to host the WPA 2013 Championships, as we are truly committed to the promotion of the sport and our location in 'The Other Vegas,' SM,' said Greg Gooding, General Manager of The Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa. 'We feel that this is a great partnership and an amazing opportunity to showcase Lake Las Vegas as a true paddle boarding destination, for beginners and experts alike.'

Since 2009, Hennessey's and the WPA have conducted the U.S. Paddle Championships and the WPA U.S. Regional Race Series that serves as qualifying events for the Hennessey's-WPA World Championships each year.

The vision of the WPA is to ensure the future of the sport by providing a fun and fair paddling experience for paddlers of all levels. 'The WPA could not be happier to expose the sport to a unique venue like the Westin Lake Las Vegas to the paddling world,' said WPA co-founder, Byron Kurt. 'This will only help grow the sport to the masses and take the sport of SUP and paddling to the next level.'
