I go back to the 60's with Boy Messenger
by Tony Cable on 19 Sep 2003
We did some sailing on Bacchus D, in charter.
As I remember him this morning, I go back to Messenger's Boatshed at Double Bay in 1960, when Geoff Ormiston bought from Boy the recent arrival from Tasmania, the twice Hobart veteran, ‘Tarni’.
Boy; as he did for so many yachtsmen, took Geoff (and me) on our first ocean races.
I can still hear him singing ( in weather that was not, I thought, conducive to singing):
‘ I'll be down to get you in a taxi honey-------’.
Ever since, he always called me by a private nickname ‘Tony Tarni’.
I will be having a glass on Friday (at the QLD) for my lovable, gregarious, generous, friend.
One of the most famous members of the CYC, and one of its greatest yachtsmen and seamen.
Tony Tarni
