Round the Island Race - Bronenosec tops Swan fleet

by Jennifer Hall on 4 Jun 2013
Igor Frolov helms Swan 60 Bronenosec - First Swan Over the Line at the JP Morgan Round the Island Race Nautor's Swan
The 2013 JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race was relished by the original Swan 36 design right up to the new Swan 60. At 0500 yesterday the largest of the Swan entries racing in IRC Group 0 were greeted by 12 to 15 knots from the North and a stunning sunrise in clear conditions during the first fetch to The Needles.

The Russian Swan 60 Bronenosec sailing under the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg burgee found a clear lane at the Royal Yacht Squadron end of the line and kept her speed throughout the whole circumnavigation, finishing in only 5 hours and 12 minutes; she was the first Swan overall and awarded the ClubSwan trophy, as well as being sixth in class and 13th IRC overall.

Igor Frolov, Director of Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, helming on board Bronenosec spoke happily on receiving the ClubSwan Award: ‘The most memorable stage was our start with Adrian Stead lining us perfectly amongst the TP52s. The challenging part was round the back of the Wight near to St Katherine’s when we were tight two sail reaching with gusts coming in at 25 knots. We were joined onboard by the London based Gazprom Marketing and Trading Sailing Team from our sponsors which made for an enjoyable mix of crew’.

‘We are all delighted to have won the ClubSwan Award as it was my, and my crew's, first time to race round the Isle of Wight. The full crew will be back in July to Cowes for our Gazprom Swan 60 World Championships and we will then take part in the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and the Rolex Fastnet Race.’

Out of 1,459 entries the 23 strong Swan fleet put in some impressive results, within IRC Group 0 Club Swan 42 Magical Mystery Tour finished in 10th position and Club Swan 42 Brevity in 29th place.

The 60 mile race was the perfect prelude for Swan owners who are now all gearing up to the Gazprom Swan European Regatta at Cowes running from the 13-19 July, as well as the inaugural Gazprom Swan 60 World Championships and Swan 45 World Championships.

Results: Swan - Saturday 1st June
