A behemoth (pronounced be-he-moth) is an enormous, powerful mythlogical animal, with the origin probably coming from the Hebrew word b'hemah meaning beast.
We often use it when referring to very large boats like the 145 footer Marie Cha, or Paul Allen's mega-yacht the 414 foot Octopus but it struck us today that Larry Ellison´s foiling AC72 Oracle USA is also well described as a behe-moth. (get it?)
The behemoth was videoed again by an independent cameraman who captured the AC72 training on San Francisco Bay. The America's Cup Defender had her best day foiling so far seen.
As skipper helm Jimmy Spithill emphasised in his interview with us that we published on Wednesday, Oracle USA now has wheel steering rather than tiller, which allows him better ability to control the boat, as it comes on and off the foil.
The World Speed Sailing Record Council this week has sanctioned Sean Langman´s Team Australia’s passage record from Sydney to Hobart which was set over 22nd and 23rd February 2013. The ORMA 60 with its six crew members established a time of 1 day 5 hours 52 minutes and 23 seconds for the classic 630 nautical mile route, their average speed was 22 knots.
Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race 2013 is all ready to go with the 5,500 nautical mile sailing event.
The first of three groups of yachts will greet the starter at Portsea Pier on Sunday, March 17 at 1:30 pm. The second and largest group will start the following Sunday, March 24, at 10:30 am. This is anticipated to be the most closely contested division. The third start will be for the highly rated 66-footer Gusto, which will start on Thursday 28th March 2013.
The 39th Hempel Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race 2013 starts on April 6th and the Race Committee is seeking interest from skippers of Cat 1 ready yachts as a possible replacement due to the unfortunate entry withdrawal last night of the race record holder VO60 Merit from this year’s event. Merit was to occupy one of the coveted deep draft moorings in the South Passage at Lord Howe at the conclusion of this year’s race.
