And now, the documentary- Laura Dekker's solo around-world sail.

by Nancy Knudsen on 4 Mar 2013
Laura, defiant, alone, happy on her boat SW
And now, the documentary. Brooklyn-based filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger is producing and directing a documentary called 'Maidentrip', the story of solo sailor Laura Dekker's record-breaking sail around the world. Its world premiere is to take place on March 10 during the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, in Austin, Texas.

Yes next week, thousands of artists, musicians, techies, filmmakers and fans will make their way to Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest festival and they will be treated to the first full documentary of the game solo sailor's circumnavigation which made her the youngest sailor ever to complete a circumnavigation solo.

It's an appropriate place for the unconventional Dekker's premiere to take place. SXSW isn't like any other previously conceived notion of a festival; it's its own breed. It's like a confudled mass of innovation, creativity and art. Each genre, like film, music etc., is its own festival within the festival.-

Here you can check out part of the documentary, just to whet your appetite.

The voyage announcement was met with a highly publicized custody battle in 2010, but here Schlesinger focuses on a portrait of Dekker as a sailor -- alone, unconventional and fiercely independent for her years.

The young captain of the Guppy is an engaging subject, with a mix of ballsy determination and honest vulnerability. While Schlesigner checks in with Laura at her various port stops, all footage at sea is shot exclusively by Dekker.

The SXSW program notes:

14-year-old Laura Dekker sets out—camera in hand—on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. In the wake of a year-long battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura now finds herself far from land, family and unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom, adventure, and distant dreams of her early youth at sea.

Jillian Schlesinger’s debut feature amplifies Laura’s brave, defiant voice through a mix of Laura's own video and voice recordings at sea and intimate footage from locations including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and South Africa.
