The Three of a Kind Regatta was hosted at Mounts Bay SC on February 16 with seven different teams all in contention to take the title. This iconic event which has been sailed annually for nearly half a century, consistently draws a variety of Classes all with a chance of winning due to the setup of the unique regatta. As usual there was a really enjoyable atmosphere at the club with the band Eleven Eleven playing the keyboard and guitar on the upstairs balcony after racing.
The Moth team won the day with the Musto High Performance Skiff’s finishing second and the 49er FX team, third. Volunteers worked with Race Officer Andy Curnow on the water to support the sailors around the two hour course providing the opportunity to rank class performance amongst the different classes. The regatta, the only one of its kind in WA, is open to all centreboard dinghies and catamarans and is raced with a class team consisting of three to five boats. All classes challenge on an equal footing with average time taken from the first three in each team adjusted by a yardstick measure.
In a first, it was fantastic to see a women’s team of 49er FX sailors enter the event. The girls have recently established themselves as a class which is to be represented at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Racing against the boys in the 49ers, they are starting to attract more interest to the class. Other teams included five 505s from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, the GP14’s from Mounts Bay and the Cherub team from Perth Dinghy Sailing Club.
