Sail Mooloolaba 2013 - Registration officially open

by Sail Mooloolaba on 22 Feb 2013
The QLD State champs Sport Boat fleet powered around the courses in last year's Sail Mooloolaba regatta - Sail Mooloolaba 2013 Teri Dodds
Sail Mooloolaba 2013 has already released the notice of the race and started accepting entries for the week-long event to be held from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 30th June 2013.

Sail Mooloolaba comprises seven events and includes sport boats, trailable yachts, keel boats, multihulls, radio controlled yachts, dinghies, match racing and even a lazy afternoon fun sail. The Notice of Race and online entry for each event is now available through Sail Mooloolaba

Organising committee chair, Tracey Johnstone, said the format for the regatta has changed slightly since last year. 'With the support of the Australian Sports Boat Association we have renamed the sports boat event to include the title Winter Nationals. The Trailable Yachts Winter Nationals is a new event in the program, but will dovetail quite well with the Sports Boats.

'Using the title winter nationals is really about saying to the sailors outside of Queensland that the place to sail in winter is here on the Sunshine Coast where the competition will be fierce and the post-race parties memorable.'

The sports boats, trailable yachts, multihulls and monohulls are the first events off over the weekend of 22nd and 23 June. In the big boats, racing will be in IRC, PHS and cruising divisions.

On Tuesday 25th the Radio Controlled Yachts will be racing on the river right in the heart of Mooloolaba. The fleet is expected to increase from last year’s 13 boats with a handful of entries travelling up from the Gold Coast to wrestle the Sail Mooloolaba crown from the hands of the local sailors.

Wednesday is the day to truly relax and enjoy a leisurely, non-spinnaker, afternoon Fun sail race around Mooloolaba Bay followed by a post-race party back at The Wharf Tavern. The race is chance for visiting sailors to enjoy the backdrop spectacle of Mooloolaba as they head out around the bay.
.
By Thursday the youth are appearing on the water with the start of the two-day Queensland Schools Invitational Match Racing Challenge. Up to eight schools will be racing on the river in the heart of Mooloolaba so spectators and supporters will be able to get up close to the action, hear the calls from umpire Alan Carlisle and throw a few words of advice to the competitors.

The final event of the week is the mass-fleet Dinghy Division. The invited classes are – 420, 505, A Class, Catamaran, Contender, Hobie 16, Laser, Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial, Optimist, Pacer and Sabot.

'We hope to have close to 100 boats on the water on the final weekend as many of them use the event to shake off the winter cobwebs.

'Combining so many events into one week is about celebrating winter sailing at a beautiful location. Mooloolaba has so much to offer. It’s a lively tourism hub with plenty of accommodation choices, quick access to the open water course and fun things to do for the families of competitors,' Johnstone said.
