West Marine's 'Green Products of 2013' announced - both practical

by West Marine/Sail-World Cruising on 18 Feb 2013
West Marine Green Product Winners presented SW
They are both practical, both as green as a magic dragon and both worthy of the attention of a cruising sailor. Two products were selected as West Marine's 2013 'Green Product of the Year' Winners: Attwood's Fuel Demand Valve and West Marine CFA bottom paint share the top honor and the $10,000 prize.

The judges made their selection based on effectiveness, cost-competitiveness, environmental impact, degree of innovation and verification of claims.

Attwood's Fuel Demand Valve:
This innovative new product ensures pressurized fuel does not reach the engine preventing engine flooding and fuel spillage. New EPA portable fuel tanks are required to remain sealed up to a minimum of 5psi. The Attwood Fuel Demand Valve prevents pressurized fuel from flooding the engine or spilling into the water. The valve provides fuel to the engine only when demanded by the engine during start up or engine operation. Designed in partnership with OEM engine manufacturers the Attwood Fuel Demand Valve is compatible with all OEM Engine brands and helps to ensure proper engine start up and function.

Main advantages are:
Prevents engine flooding due to pressurized fuel.
Allows only the amount of fuel requested by the engine. Prevents a pressurized 'slug' of fuel from reaching engine.
Prevents fuel spray down stream from the Fuel Demand Valve. Use the Attwood Universal Sprayless Connector to prevent spraying at the fuel tank (8838US6).
Made of high-strength composite material designed to withstand harsh abuse of marine environment.
Compatible with 3/8' and 5/16' fuel hose.
Installs between the fuel tank and the primer bulb.
Low vacuum restriction helps ensure proper engine function during startup and engine operation (less than 2kPa at 125 liters/hour)
20psi max nominal input pressure. Protected for 40psi pressure spike.
Built in manual override.
2 Year Warranty
Compatible with Ethanol blended fuels
Compatible with all OEM brand engines (1hp - 350hp)
OEM quality and performance at a fraction of the price

West Marine CFA Bottom Paint - available 1st March 2013:
The world’s first copper-free, dual biocide, water-based ablative antifouling paint uses the highest level of the new metal-free Econea biocide combined with a slime fighting inhibitor for multi-season protection. CFA Bottom Paint can be used on boats that stay in the water year-round, or those that haul in the winter, since exposure to air doesn’t change the antifouling properties. Water-based formulation is used to replace the volatile solvents found in most bottom paints.

Better-for-the-environment CFA Eco combines metal-free ECONEA® biocide with Zinc omadine, a slime fighting agent, to provide dual-biocide, multi-season protection. Innovative technology replaces the noxious solvents found in most bottom paints with water, for easier application and cleanup, with low VOCs and no heavy solvent smell. This copper-free formula can be safely used on all substrates including aluminum.

The panel of esteemed judges who selected the 'Green Product of the Year' Honorees included:

Margaret Podlich, President, BoatUS
Stan Honey, Director of Technology, America’s Cup Event Authority
Dr. Randy Kochevar, Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station
