Australians look to be form Teams after Day 1 at CentrePort champs

by RPNYC Events on 14 Feb 2013
2013YouthMR - 2013 CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Championship RPNYC Events

The 2013 CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Championship is underway on Wellington Harbour and at the end of day one Ash Rooklyn’s team from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and Sam Gilmour’s team from the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club look like they could be form horses for the regatta.

After twelve of the fourteen flights in round robin one Rooklyn and Gilmour are both yet to drop a match. The stage is set for an interesting last match in the round robin when the two so far unbeaten skippers will meet each other.

Also sailing well on day one is Sam Mackay’s team from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. Mackay’s team has dropped only one match so far and it is looking like he will be amongst the leading three at the end of the first round robin, and could even upset the form book when he meets Rooklyn in the first match tomorrow.

A tight tussle is beginning to evolve in the middle of the fleet with three skippers locked reasonably close together. Hampus Applegren from the Royal Swedish Yacht Club and Basil Connor from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club have both finished their first round robin with three while Scotty Barnes from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is currently on two wins with two matches still to sail.

The sailors have been treated to champagne sailing conditions on day one in Wellington with the breeze building through to 15 knots and hardly a cloud in the sky.

Racing is set to continue tomorrow with the last matches of round robin one and the second round robin. The preliminary rounds will be followed by a semi finals series before the finals which are scheduled for Sunday.
