Auckland Anniversary Regatta- Ocean Photography support historic event

Will Calver on the job for Ocean Photography SW

The founder of Ocean Photography and the Ocean Gallery in the Viaduct Harbour is now an official supporter of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta – and he has a story to tell.

The rat race of British life had Will Calver entirely fed up when he and his wife Catherine packed up their lives and two young children and set off on a world cruise aboard their yacht, Finale, in 2003.

They cruised the world for two years before settling in Auckland, where Will, established himself as a marine photographer, eventually opening Ocean Gallery, next to KZ-1 and the Maritime Museum in the Viaduct Harbour - Auckland, which is now considered to be New Zealand's premier marine art and photography centre.

'Our gallery tends to be a meeting place for sailors and non sailors alike. I always wanted to showcase not just my work but also other artists, both established and up and coming.'

The gallery fits in perfectly with its surroundings and has strong ties with 'Voyager' New Zealand’s Maritime Museum.

'Our aim was to create something unique that captures the visual beauty of yachting in New Zealand and specifically Auckland,' says Will of the boutique gallery that specialises in contemporary marine photography, classic original artwork, from a range of artists, and which also publishes the annual New Zealand Sailing Calendar, available both in the gallery and its online store.

Will Calver and Ocean Photography will be the official photographer of Auckland Anniversary Regatta which starts at 10am 28 January 2012. The event was founded 173 years ago and includes 16 different sailing, Waka ama, dragon boating and tug boat races.

'This event is historic, and personally my ninth year and hopefully not as eventful as my first year where I broke two ribs while shooting the event. Auckland Anniversary Regatta often offers great opportunities to capture fantastic images on camera,' says Will.

Full details of racing can be found at www.regatta.org.nz. Organisations supporting the event are the Royal New Zealand Navy, Classic Hits 97.4FM, the Spirit of Adventure Trust, The Southern Trust, The Lion Foundation, and Ports of Auckland Ltd.

Ocean Gallery is open from 10am-5pm from Monday to Friday, and from 10am-4pm on Saturdays.
