Sydney Harbour's new superyacht harbour causing angst

Superyacht facility in Sydney Harbour - only two tiny sails in sight (so far) SW
Yachts have long been a scene in Sydney Harbour, which has always successfully combined pleasure sailing with commercial shipping, and the residents of Sydney have always loved the sight of pleasure craft both sailing and sleeping by the shore. However, the new superyacht marina in Rozelle Bay is causing some angst.

The $25-million Superyacht Marina, which includes 24 berths, offices, a yacht club, restaurant and an outdoor deck, pretty familiar stuff for yachts, with facilities similar to those in Rushcutters Bay and Middle Harbour except that they are for superyachts, was approved by the Planning Assessment Commission last week.

The Glebe Society, though, is up in arms about the new yachting complex. The society's Dr Lesley Lynch said the noise pollution would be 'appalling' and traffic created by the development would be 'unmanageable'.

Dr Lynch told the Inner West Courier that the Superyacht Marina was another 'one-off' development approved in the Bays Precinct without a strategic plan. 'If this trend of one-off development is to be halted, we must hope the government will heed community input to the much anticipated Bays Precinct Taskforce Report,' she said.

If there is such a report in the making, one hopes that it will keep in mind that Sydney has always been, and hopefully will always remain, a strong boating and sailing city.
