Raja Muda 2012 – Penang Rickshaw Races

by Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia on 21 Nov 2012
Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta 2012 - Penang Rickshaw Races - KukuKERchu goes with the ’rear mount’ technique Guy Nowell / RMSIR
Just because the annual rickshaw races aren’t part of the Raja Muda pointscore, doesn’t mean they aren’t taken seriously. Men between the shafts, girls sculling beers, arguments at the mark, on-water (well, on-the-quayside) penalties… this little add-on to the Raja Muda has all the ingredients for some serious mayhem.

Run along the promenade at Straits Quay, this year 16 teams flexed their running and drinking muscles, with the lads from Australian Maid prevailing in the end.

A good time was had by all, and then the rain came down.

Tomorrow: inshore racing off Batu Ferringhi. Bring an umbrella (just in case)…
