2012 Coastal Classic Start - V5 (David Nathan) hitting 22kts soon after the start Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz

Get up close with the sailing action in these two videos taken during the wild 2012 Coastal Classic Race - a 120nm sprint from Auckland to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The fleet was hit with a 35kt squall soon after the start which gave them a slingshot start for the ride north.

The first is from abroad the ORMA60 TeamVodafoneSailing (Simon Hull). They set a new race record, for the multihulls for the third year in a row. She was clocking at over 35kts leaving the start, and hit a reported top speed of over 46kts during the race.

The second is taken from alongside some of the racers, but particularly V5, a canting keel TP52 skippered by David Nathan. She hit 22kts soon after the start and peaked at over 28kts during the race. This video was taken by the courageous photographer Will Calver
Please excuse the occasional camera shake :-)
