Tasmania this week

by Carl Hyland on 10 Sep 2012
It's a cold day at the Great lakes Carl Hyland
Wild, windy weather has kept most anglers indoors, but with spring weather just around the corner, many are gearing up for what looks to be a bumper fishing year ahead. Some have already got good fish on their tally boards and whilst being knee deep in snow is not everyone’s cup of tea, those who have braved the elements have been well rewarded, especially at places such as the Great Lakes and Authurs Lake in the Central Highlands.

The trout season has been open for just over a month and many are now visiting places that have lain dormant to angling all winter. Pipers River and the Huon River in the South are two lowland waters that run to the sea, yet they hold a good head of sea run trout which attract enthusiastic anglers from around the country.

Whitebait runs are now ramping up and where you get whitebait, you get big trout chasing them Whether you be a bait anglers using freshwater pike as bait or an avid lure flicker, there is bound to be a fish or two just waiting for the opportunity to strike. Good lures for this time are bibbed minnows or the Tasmanian cobra lures which are so popular all over the country. Colours are the Spotted Dog, Coachdog and in the Cobras, I’d be trying the ever popular Traffic Lights or anything with silver in it.

If you are contemplating a trip to Tasmania, you can purchase you license online or by visiting any one of the licensed agents in the state.

In the meantime, waters have been stocked with some huge fish, places such as Craigbourne Dam in the South and Brushy Lagoon or Lake Barrington in the North.

If you do plan to pop down for a spot of fishing, log into the Tasmanian Fishing website and say hello to the avid 1700 anglers who call this site their own and get some friendly advice. Nine times out of ten, you will hook up with a fishing mate who can show you some hot spots and perhaps get you on to that fish of a lifetime.
Until next time, safe fishing.
