James Turner (helm) has been sailing the Olympic 470 for two years, in February 2012 together with Finn Drummond, won Silver at the 470 Junior World Championships.
Carl Evans (crew) previously was helm sailing with Peter Burling in the 470 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Carl and Peter were the youngest sailors (aged 17), in NZ history to cross an Olympic start line and placed 11th at this event.
Together we have joined forces to achieve our individual dreams - to medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. There are many steps that must be achieved along the way, in order to fulfil our ambition, the first is a top 16 placing at the World Championships at La Rochelle in 2013. Previous to this event we intend to compete at a minimum of four regattas in Europe in order to be regularly competing and matching up with the best sailors around the world.
We both will reduce our university studies in 2013 so we can commit to training on and off the water, and spend four months overseas competing.
We also try to give back to the community where and when we can through coaching and mentoring junior sailors within Sailing clubs and clinics, in October we are involved in a paddle board team event raising money for charity www.paddleforhope.co.nz
We really appreciate you support and look forward to keeping you up to date with our progress.
James and Carl
