Was it the weather or the fact that Australia picked up so many sailing medals during the recent Olympics? Either way a large number of spectators on board the John Cadman and numerous other spectator boats got to see sailing up close last weekend as the Victorian sixth fleet held one of their training days on the waters of Hobson Bay.
The first weekend of spring saw, not only warm weather and some sunshine, something that has been in very short supply over recent months in Melbourne. It also saw 30+ International Cadets taking advantage of the warm weather for the second sixth fleet training weekend.
Unlike the first weekend where the second day was blown out, there were no such problems this time around with the Saturday having light breezes followed by Sunday’s 10 to 15 knots.
Judging by the reactions of the teams it would appear this has been a huge success, and given the International Cadet nationals and worlds are only three and a bit months away the more water time the better. There has been a lot of dinghy sailing taking place during winter with regular training and racing happening out of Royal Yacht Club of Victoria along with this, sixth fleet have been running weekend intensive coaching sessions, the focus of these has been to keep the Victorian fleet on the water during winter.
Thanks go to Royal Geelong Yacht Club for hosting the first event and to Royal Yacht Club of Victoria for hosting the most recent event.
