At age 17 Southport Yacht Club's Youth Sailor, Jack Sherring, took the win at the Zhik Nautica Moth Worlds 2012 held at Lake Garda, Italy.

This is Jack's second back to back win of the Junior Moth World Championship, along with his two time Australian Junior National Championship wins.

Jack's sailing regatta started at the Italian Nationals and in the two days of racing he had fantastic results. He finished 15th overall and 1st Junior out of 88 boats.

Jack had set himself three goals for the Worlds: one was to win the Junior World Champion Title again, the second was to get into the Gold Fleet and the third was to get the best result possible in the Open fleet.

During the qualifying series the fleet experienced all conditions - light, heavy and everything in between.

Surprisingly, as Jack was once again the lightest competitor (20kg under the ideal weight) he had his best results on the really windy days. After the nine races he was in 39th place and scored himself a spot in the Gold Fleet. There were two other juniors who qualified in the Gold Fleet hot on his heels. They were both local boys, very good sailors and a bit heavier than Jack. He had his work cut out for him.

The World Championship final series began - a nine race series. The competition really hotted up.

Once again Jack's best results were in the heavier conditions. He was able to handle his boat very well downwind while others were crashing around him. A swim during this level of competition can easily cost you 20 places when the boats are doing average speeds of 25kts.

His best result in the final series was a ninth and after nine races with one drop he finished in 30th place overall, winning the Junior World Title for 2012, thereby fullfilling all the goals he set for himself.

To top it off he earned himself a great deal of respect from the other competitors, most of whom had already heard about the lightweight kid from Australia!!

Jack has been a mamber of the Southport Yacht Club for six years.
