London Olympics 2012 - Iain Percy's parents react to silver medal win

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson (GBR), who won the Silver Medal today, 05.08.12, in the Medal Race Men’s Keelboat (Star) event in The London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. onEdition http://www.onEdition.com
At the London Olympic 2012 Sailing Competition, Brits Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson claimed silver in the Star class. David and Gillian Percy, parents of Iain Percy, talk about their son’s amazing achievement.

David - We’re so pleased, disappointed right at the end but it was fabulous, I mean to get a silver, everyone in that audience would have given their life for a silver in the Olympics and that’s fantastic.

How did it feel when you were watching the finish?

Gillian - Just really hard, I didn’t count anything because I just know what a hard fleet it is and when people asked me before ‘Do you think he’ll get gold?’ and I said you can’t bet on anything in the Star Fleet. It was hard.

Atmosphere on the Nothe?

David - Initially it was electric with people cheering. Up to a 100 metres (from the finish), he looked like he was in fourth place which would have secured it (gold) for him. But you know a Silver medal is pretty amazing.

How do you think they are feeling?

Katrina (sister) - Pretty similar to the rest of us, they’ll be absolutely gutted that the gold went by in the last 10 metres or so but I think once they reflect on it, they know what the competition’s like in the Star class, it’s full of Olympic medallists, World Champions and they’ve just got a silver medal so they’ve done really well and they’ll be RYA website
