On day 2 of the 2012 Kite Slalom European Championships in Gizzeria, Italy, another four rounds of exciting slalom racing were completed.
Elimination 4 went underway as schedule at 13:00, this time with the fleet divided into four groups. All the favorites from yesterday made their way into the semi finals . In the final, Maxime Nocher (FRA, North) got disqualified for an incident with the current leader, Lorenzo Giovanelli (ITA, Temavento/Slingshot), finishing third behind Julien Kerneur (FRA, RRD) and Luca Marcis (ITA, RRD). The womens final went another time to Maria Ruth Piscopo (ITA, Brunotti/Ozone) ahead of Vanina Puteri (ITA, RRD) and Mathilde Serin (FRA, Naish).
Straight after elimination 4 two full fleet races were scheduled for both men and women. Bruno Sroka (FRA, Cabrinha/Aguera) went for a start at the pin end but was catched over early causing a general recall. The re-run was won by Giovanelli ahead of Kerneur and Marcis. In the womens fleet, Piscopo continued her winning streak ahead of Serin and Ariane Imbert (FRA, North).
After the lunch break, a half fleet race was on the program, with all top favorites advancing to the final except Nocher who injured himself in elimination 5, causing him to stay on the beach for the rest of the day. Lets hope he can come back to continue racing tomorrow. Sroka got a disqualification against Giovanni Santostefano (ITA, NJS, Ozone) on the second to last mark, which allowed Kerneur to take victory again ahead of Giovanelli and Marcis. For the women it was Serin this time taking victory, ahead of Imbert and Merve Ceylan (TUR, Ozone/Aguera).
The final full fleet race had to be postponed due to the wind getting light and shifty, but finally got underway at 17:30 hours with Sroka blasting down the line for this first victory of the day and Giovanelli and Kerneur close behind. Ceylan got her first bullet with Puteri and Imbert in second and third.
Racing continues tomorrow and especially in the mens fleet there is still everything open between the top four ranked riders. With a third and fourth discard after the eighth and 11th race everything can still change.
